Ken Czech

Presenter:

“When Historical Fact Collides With Historical Fiction”

Ken Czech has planted his writing roots in both the non-fiction and fiction genres. An avid outdoorsman, Ken wrote the Outdoors Column for the St. Cloud Times (Minnesota) and has published a pair of annotated bibliographies focusing on the literature of hunting in Africa and Asia. Czech’s other non-fiction work includes serving as a contributing editor for America’s Civil War magazine and publishing over one hundred magazine articles and book reviews.

Ken received an MA degree in history from St. Cloud State University (SCSU) and his doctorate in education from Saint Mary’s University. While teaching history at SCSU, he wrote books on women as big game hunters as well as anthologies on hunting in pre-World War II Russia and China.

After retiring from teaching, Czech’s passion turned to writing historical fiction. His novels span historical events from 19th century Africa, 1842 Afghanistan, 16th century Siberia, and an attempt by Tsar Ivan the Terrible to wed into the family of Queen Elizabeth I in The Tsar’s Locket. Rabia Tanveer, in her review of his novel for Reader’s Favorite, said “This is an astonishing story that had me hooked from the beginning.”

About his presentation, When Historical Fact Collides With Historical Fiction, Ken said, “I hope to have the participants identify the period or personality in history they are most drawn to and why. Once the real events are fleshed out, characters and conflict can be established. How do you picture your hero? How does your hero react to change or threat? It’s that reaction that launches your story and sets the hook for readers.”
